Ode to a camera

15th July 2013 Paul Chris Jones

Today I'm off work. I will be every day in the foreseeable future, judging from what my employer says:

We’ll be honest with you, at the moment, we are not foreseeing much demand [for you] during the summer.

So today has been a day of tying up loose ends.

It's a Panasonic DMC-FH25.

Last year, I had a friend who showed me some HD footage he had taken. I was impressed with the quality of HD. As someone who occassionally makes films, I dreamt that one day I too would have the power of HD.

Then, early last year, I found a HD camera. Being poor, I kept it. I showed it to my friend and he was impressed - "It's better than mine!" he exclaimed. The camera films in 16 mega pixels - his was 15.6, as I recall.

Then, a few months later, it explicably stopped working. The lens wouldn't come out. I hadn't dropped it. It just stopped working.

I took it to a camera shop, but they told me it would cost more than the camera to fix it.

So I put it away for a while, not wanting to throw it away. One day, I thought, one day, I will fix it.

It's now been in my possession for a year and half. So today, with my mindset of completing unfinished tasks, I got it out. I was taken aback by how light it is - I remembered it being heavier. It gives me the impression of it being cheap and flimsy.

I've tried unscrewing it, but I'm unable to get the tiny, tiny screws out. The screws must be the smallest in the world. I have a set of small screwdrivers, and even the most miniscule of these isn't small enough to prise these infinitesimal screws out of their cold, uncaring metal shell.

I've never found out how much the camera's worth... turns out it's only a pathetic $149. But this also surprises me in that one can get HD for $149!

As always, answers lead to more questions:

  1. How well can my ipod film compared to this camera?
  2. How much is the cheapest HD camera?

As to what to do with the camera... perhaps I'll throw it out a window? Smash it with a hammer? Or less theatrically, maybe I'll just throw it away?

By the way, I've just received confirmation that I'm working tomorrow. Wish I hadn't wasted my day blogging about a cheap, broken camera now.

Update: After writing this, I managed to fix the camera by bashing it violently on a table. This dislodged the lens. The camera is now working!.
